Rabbit

Recommendations

Overweight rabbit

Keep your rabbit from becoming obese

Rabbits in small cages with unbalanced diets easily gain weight. Do not feed bread, biscuits or other unsuitable human snacks.

Combine hay, dried forage, pellets, vegetables and fruit in measured meals. Fibre-digesting bacteria in the gut need hay; hay also helps move ingested fur through the gut.

Rabbit with cucumber

Cucumber and lettuce can cause diarrhoea

High water, low dry matter—cucumber and lettuce can loosen droppings in rabbits, guinea pigs and birds and disturb gut flora. Offer very sparingly or omit in sensitive animals.

Rabbit dental examination

Dental overgrowth

Wild rabbits wear teeth on tough plants. Poor diets cause overgrowth or fractures and inability to eat, with rapid weight loss. Provide coarse hay, safe branches and a balanced diet. Routine vet dental checks about every three months are recommended.
