Turtle in a terrarium

Turtles need a proper terrarium

A terrarium is the right home; tiny “fish bowls” are temporary and inadequate. Aquatic turtles grow and need a larger tank–terrarium setup.

For aquatic species: half water, a basking rock, filter, substrate, lighting and winter heating where needed. Water depth and temperature must allow safe swimming and basking.

Keep tropical species warm

Reptiles are ectothermic; without correct warmth, feeding and activity slow. Provide spot/fluorescent lamps, heaters and basking rocks as needed, with thermostats to avoid overheating.

If your turtle does not brumate

Wild turtles may brumate in cold weather. Indoors, stable warmth may prevent a full cycle. “In-between” temperatures all winter can drain energy—aim for stable, species-appropriate heat.

Aquatic turtles cannot live in a tiny bowl

Baby turtles grow; upgrade tank size. Waste builds up in cramped water and increases disease risk. Prefer a large aquarium, basking areas, maintained filtration and suitable lighting.
